Accessibility Statement

MHSB is committed to ensuring that our website and digital services are accessible to all users, including people with disabilities. We continually work to improve the user experience for everyone.

Our commitment

MHSB believes that the internet should be available and accessible to everyone. We are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of ability or technology. We strive to ensure that our digital services meet or exceed the requirements of applicable accessibility laws and guidelines, and we view accessibility as an ongoing effort rather than a one-time project.

Conformance target

We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. These guidelines are developed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI) and define how to make web content more accessible to people with a wide range of disabilities, including visual, auditory, motor, speech, cognitive, language, learning, and neurological disabilities. Conformance with these guidelines also helps make web content more usable to all users.

Measures we take

To ensure accessibility across our website, we have implemented the following measures:

Semantic HTML

We use proper semantic HTML elements to convey document structure and meaning. Headings, landmarks, lists, and other structural elements are used appropriately so that assistive technologies can accurately interpret and present content to users.

Keyboard navigation

All interactive elements on our website, including navigation menus, forms, buttons, and links, are accessible via keyboard. Users can navigate the entire site using the Tab, Enter, Escape, and arrow keys without requiring a mouse or other pointing device. Focus indicators are visible so that keyboard users can track their position on the page.

Screen reader support

Our website is built to work with popular screen readers, including NVDA, JAWS, and VoiceOver. We use ARIA (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) attributes where necessary to provide additional context for dynamic content, interactive controls, and custom components that go beyond native HTML capabilities.

Color contrast

We maintain sufficient color contrast ratios between text and background colors throughout the site to ensure readability for users with low vision or color vision deficiencies. Our design palette is tested against WCAG 2.1 Level AA contrast requirements, which require a minimum contrast ratio of 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text.

Text alternatives

All meaningful images, icons, and non-text content on our website include descriptive alternative text or appropriate ARIA labels. Decorative images are marked so that screen readers can skip them, reducing unnecessary noise for users who rely on assistive technology.

Responsive and flexible design

Our website is designed to be responsive and adapts to a variety of screen sizes, orientations, and zoom levels. Content remains readable and functional when text is resized up to 200% without loss of content or functionality, supporting users who need larger text or use screen magnification tools.

Ongoing efforts

Accessibility is not a destination but an ongoing commitment. We regularly review and test our website against WCAG 2.1 Level AA criteria. Our efforts include periodic audits using both automated testing tools and manual evaluation, training our team on accessibility best practices, incorporating accessibility considerations into our design and development workflows, and addressing accessibility issues promptly as they are identified. When we add new features or content to the site, we evaluate them for accessibility before deployment.

Known limitations

While we strive for comprehensive accessibility, some areas of our site may not yet be fully accessible. Known limitations include:

  • Some older PDF documents may not be fully optimized for screen readers. We are working to remediate these files and provide accessible alternatives upon request.
  • Certain embedded third-party content, such as video players or external widgets, may have accessibility limitations outside of our direct control.
  • Some interactive data visualizations may not convey all information to assistive technology users. We provide text-based alternatives where possible.

We are actively working to resolve these issues and improve our overall accessibility posture.

Third-party content

Our website may include content or functionality provided by third parties, such as embedded videos, social media feeds, analytics tools, and scheduling widgets. While we select third-party tools with accessibility in mind, we cannot guarantee full conformance of content we do not directly control. If you encounter accessibility barriers with third-party content on our site, please let us know so we can work with the provider to find a solution or offer an alternative means of access.

Assistive technology compatibility

Our website is designed to be compatible with the following assistive technologies:

  • Screen readers, including NVDA (Windows), JAWS (Windows), and VoiceOver (macOS and iOS).
  • Screen magnification software, including ZoomText and built-in operating system zoom features.
  • Speech recognition software, including Dragon NaturallySpeaking.
  • Keyboard-only navigation across all major browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge).
  • Operating system accessibility features, including high-contrast modes and reduced-motion preferences.

We test with the latest versions of these technologies on a regular basis. If you experience issues with a specific assistive technology and browser combination, please contact us with details so we can investigate and resolve the problem.

Feedback and contact

We welcome your feedback on the accessibility of the MHSB website. If you encounter accessibility barriers, have difficulty accessing any content, or have suggestions for improvement, please contact us.
